I learned many years ago that if you do not have a reservation on Mother’s Day, stay home. I did not expect this year to be any different. My only child was working and I had not made any concrete plans. When I do make plans ,I prefer to dine at a high end restaurant. This Mother’s Day may have changed my mind.
Somewhere around noon I decided that everyone would be out eating so the retail stores would be empty and I would go window shopping or pick up a few needed items. I confess that I was not extremely happy that I was not part of the big Mother’s Day ritual this year, so shopping might make me feel better.
Midway through the different stores, I began to recognize that I was hungry and not close to home. Oh no, not Burger King on Mother’s Day! I decided to take a chance and see if my favorite Chinese restaurant would be available. The Orient was very busy as I suspected they would be, but by a miracle I seemed to arrive at a slight lull in the business and was seated almost immediately.
I love this place!! I try other Chinese Restaurants, but always return to the Orient. The decor is classic Chinese with beautiful carved wooden chairs and chinese decorations. An etched glass divider adds to the charm. The menu offers the classic dishes along with a few higher priced specialty items and I have never ordered anything I did not enjoy.
The complimentary tea and fried wontons with hot mustard and duck sauce were served with the menu. This day I chose the crabmeat wonton appetizer; wonton filled with crabmeat, onion, and a cream cheese filling then fried. YUMMY!! For my entree I chose The Garlic Lovers Special; shrimp and beef with peppers, water chestnuts, carrots, in a delicious garlic sauce. It is served with white rice. For desert The Orient serves a complimentary fortune cookie, jello bars, and pineapple chucks. Of course they have other desserts you may order from the menu. I am always too full to indulge.
Please stop in and give them a try and tell them La Critique sent you. They have no idea who I am , but they will be excited to know they received a good review. Thanks Orient for brightening my Mother’s Day!
A combined rating based on food, service, cleanliness, and ambiance I give the Orient a 4.0. There may be better Chinese restaurants, but I have not found them yet.

we moved 1yr ago to NC and can’t find anything remotely as good as the Orient’s food. no one can touch their hot and sour soup or anything else for that matter! When we come home to visit one of the first stops is always The Orient. Thank you Daphane and family for some of the finest chinese cuisine outside of Chinatown!!!!
