$44.55 for two excluding tax, tip.

I have wanted to try the Texas Roadhouse since it opened. Usually, I am in the area earlier in the day and the restaurant does not open until 4 pm, leaving me longing for the dining experience. Thursday evening the stars finally aligned and I was shopping for a portable tent for my next book signing across the street from the Texas Roadhouse as the clock struck 4 pm. It was now or never.

My friend and I arrived to an already full parking lot. What magic does this restaurant hold? We were seated immediately and asked if we had been there before. We said no and the server proceeded completely and efficiently to explain all the nuances of dining at Texas Roadhouse.

We were tired and thirsty so we ordered a cocktail, which I have not included in the price as this is a personal preference. The drink list is very inviting and the beverage was excellent for those who want to choose this option. Although not noted above, two cocktails with an upgrade of alcohol cost $13.50.

Our server made the appetizers sound so yummy, we ordered the combo appetizer for $9.99. It included 4 loaded potato skins; topped with cheese and bacon. The appetizer also included 4 ja poppers which were very good. The breading was light and the peppers very hot. The third item on the appetizer plate was a version of chicken tenders with a hot creamy sauce and a bar b que sauce, both excellent. Again the breading was light and the item tasty. The portion was just right for two people.

There was a time when I would eat steak often.  Age and education finds me less likely to indulge. Tonight was the night and I could only hope that it would be very special because tomorrow back to chicken and fish. I ordered the Dallas Filet 12 oz steak for $15.49. It is served with two sides. Your salad counts as a side. I ordered the baked potato, not loaded, and the salad.  My steak was dry and a little disappointing. I know some of this is because I ordered it well done. Something education again has costs me in enjoyment. My potato was large and delicious and the salad with their homemade blue cheese dressing was excellent except for the fact that they put egg in their salad. I do not like egg in my salad and that is the one place our server  lost a few points. I believe if the restaurant adds different  selections in an item and you have never been there before, they server should tell you. I picked out the egg and enjoyed the salad. I did mention to the server she should remember to tell people. I know,I know, most people like egg in their salad. I have been told this before.

My friend ordered the 12 oz Fort Worth Ribeye smothered in onions and mushrooms. His steak made my mouth water so he gave me a bite. His medium done entree was delicious and I was jealous. On my return trip I know what I am ordering. He also ordered the baked sweet potato loaded with cinnamon and marshmallows. It was excellent. His steak was $15.99 plus $1.99 for the mushrooms and onions and an additional $1.09 for the additions to the sweet potato.

There was no room for dessert. We avoided temptation by not looking at the menu.

The decor is what you would expect from this type of restaurant; rustic, western, and loud. I like the country music played in the background, but it is difficult to hear or have a conversation because of the acoustics. But if you like buckets of complimentary peanuts and loud environments, and steak, this is definitely the place for you.

My friend and I added up our scores. Cocktails got a 5.  Our appetizer received a 3 because it appeared to truly be made on the premises and not purchased frozen and fried. My entree was scored a  2 because even a well done Filet Mignon should be tender and tasty. My friends rib eye scored a 4. For service we decided on a rating of 4 which for a chain restaurant is very good. And lastly for cleanliness a 3.5. The dining room was very clean, but on the way out as I passed the kitchen, I noticed the floor of the kitchen was a little messy and dirty. This would give me pause as to the condition of other surfaces. However, you must give them credit for leaving the door open. How many restaurants do that?

As with all chain restaurants, the proof is in the management. Overall with this score, I would say this management is doing a good job. Of course, there is always room for improvement.

So our final score adding up all the scores and averaging the total is 3.5

The area around the Cumberland Mall is growing and growing. More and more food options all the time. I will be testing them all.

Happy eating!

Anyone who orders a steak cooked well done should not be considered a reliable critic for a steakhouse! Honestly, it’s nearly impossible to cook any cut of beef to well done and keep it juicy. I go to the Texas Roadhouse a lot, and i’ve gotta say it’s one of the best steakhouses around - I always get a larger Sirloin cut (16-20z depending on how hungry i am), and they always cook it to perfection at medium rare, juicy, tasty, and with a hint of a lovely charred exterior.

If the Roadhouse should loose any points, it certainly shouldn’t be for food preparation, i think they do a bang up job. My pet peeves with it is the presentation. For some reason, the Millville location loves to do the diner-style side dishes - that actually come out on side dishes instead of being on my plate. I’m not a fan of the cafetria style, if someone is obsessive compulsive about their food touching, they should have to make a special order, not me who wants all his food on one easy to manage plate. Of course, i usually forgo the salad and simply order an extra starch, so if i don’t make it a point to tell them to put my sides directly onto my plate, my table gets cluttered up fast.

Overall i think the review should have been a half a point more favorable, but that’s coming from a true steak lover, who wouldn’t dare defile his beef by cooking it so much. Some others would certainly agree with La Critique, to be safe and keep it overcooked, so it’s a great thing to mention, but i don’t think it should detract from the score. If anything, it should have been the loud blaring Cotton Eyed Joe techno remix that the Roadhouse should loose points over. Heh.
