It has long been an axiom that if you build venues with a mix of retail, entertainment and dining “they will come”. In the Portland suburb of Tigard the open air Bridgeport Village proves the point. Several dozen shops, a national book store and a cinema complex join with numerous cafes and restaurants offer a great setting in which to spend a few hours, or half day. In September of this year Tigard will become a stop on the almost 15 mile WES-West Side Express rail route. The transit friendly Portland metropolitan area will now have the ability to get to Tigard by train, through a combination of the Metropolitan Area Express light rail and a change to WES at the Beaverton station. Until then, the car is the best option.Your review and a group of colleagues celebrated the end of a project with dinner at the Mc Cormick & Schmick’s Grill, one of four Portland area company owned restaurants.
On this particular evening, the Pacific Northwest had yet to enjoy some of the warmer temperatures that were already becoming more frequent on the east coast. It was good to get inside out of the chill. The interior was typical of the chains other establishments and crowning the center of the dining area was a nice white ornamental dome letting in the waning daylight. Our booth was ample for the six in our party. Water was offered and drink orders were taken for those inclined. Your reviewer passed on the cocktails but chose a diet soft drink. The dinner menu had something for everyone including 11 Appetizers ranging from an Oregon Bay Shrimp Cocktail at $6.95 to a half dozen portion of Chilled Oysters on the Half Shell for $13.95. Soups and Side Salads were an even dozen in number ranging from a cup of Roasted Corn and Poblano Chowder at $2.95 to an entrée size Caesar Salad with Dungeness Crab and Bay Shrimp for $16.95. Burgers and Sandwiches are on offer starting at $8.95 for the Chipotle Chicken Burger. Steaks and Shellfish have about 7 choices.
The main theme of the dinner menu, as might be expected, would be Northwest Regional Specialties and Seafood. The regional entrees start with Artic Char from Oregon’s Hood River at $16.95; the highest price in this category is the Alaska Wild Sockeye Salmon at $25.95. The Grilled Seafood has five items including an Idaho Rainbow Trout for $17.95. Finally an additional 5 choices in the Traditional Seafood category include Alaskan Cod and Chips at $15.95 and Jumbo Prawn Scampi at $28.95. With all of those choices your reviewer really felt in the mood for a Dungeness Crab Cake; unfortunately there is no such offering…the closest is a combination of King Crab and Bay Shrimp Cakes at $21.95. The otherwise pleasant waiter advised your reviewer that a plain crab cake is not often requested! Well, Dorothy wasn’t in Maryland anymore so it was an alternative, the Alaskan Cod.
An unremarkable bread with dipping oil came to the table and filled the void until the entrees arrived. Your reviewer was pleased with the Alaskan Cod served in a metal basket. The fish was fresh and firm; the chips were tasty without being overly greasy. Two of my colleagues who had ordered the Ribeye Steak were not particular pleased with the quality of the meat-it was too chewy. For $24.95 they felt that it should have been better. The conversation rolled around to dessert but although the tray looked tempting, it was best to bank the calories for another day. For this visit your reviewer gave the overall rating of 2.0 Chews. Being part of a national chain, you will get a certain institutional feeling and most likely a good, but not exceptional meal.
