When you are born in Philadelphia and spend most of your life in South Jersey, you are always searching for the perfect cheesesteak sub. I have eaten many on my quest for perfection and once in awhile, I find it. Years ago there was a little place in Malaga that had the most wonderful cheese steak subs. Then there was a place over by Salem Hospital that was as good , if not better. Alas, both of these establishments have joined the ranks of places not there anymore. Still I search.
Realizing that taste is subjective and what I find delicious, others might not enjoy, I chuckle how much time I have spent trying to discern what actually makes the ones I like so tasty. After much consideration, I think I am ready to share my thoughts. First, the sandwich steak must be quality and sliced very thin with little fat. Some brands just will not muster up to the task. If you insist on using that awful melted cheese from a can, you will not get my seal of approval. Only top quality American Cheese melted directly over the quality steak creates the perfect taste and texture. Next you must add shredded lettuce, and a jersey tomato sliced thinly. I like my onions fried, but raw onions are ok. Lastly, or should I say most importantly, it is the roll. The best meat, cheese, and toppings on a bad roll will ruin the experience every time. What is a good roll? I am not sure I can describe it, but I know it when I taste it.
I eat cheesesteak subs once in awhile, but usually I am not satisfied. So, my heart jumped with joy , the moment my taste buds recognized an old familiar taste. Finally, I found a new place. Who would have thought it would be in a pizza shop? Honestly, the rest of Mannino’s menu items are good, but nothing exceptional. Except for the cheesesteak subs. If you are in the mood for a good sandwich and are riding on route 40, turn onto Front Street in Elmer, NJ and try one. I am almost certain you will be glad you did. As for a score, I’d give the cheesesteak sub a 5.0, with the whole establishment a respectable 3.5.
