Well, I’m a little surprised and apologize as I did not see this story earlier, but it appears KFC is backing out of its promise to offer free chicken to coupon holders until 5/19. Instead, they’re now offering a raincheck system which will entitle you to another coupon for a later two-week period and a complimentary pepsi for our ‘inconvenience’ if you go to a KFC store with your original coupon and fill out paperwork. Lame. My thinking is that their inventory was getting shellacked and they hit the panic button. Marketing gone wrong? Unfortunately, now they’re going to spend a fortune in mailing expenses (the price of stamps go up monday!), not to mention the improbable feat of converting substantial goodwill into a lot of customer angst. Forget what the stock market is doing; these guys were still giving away a $4 meal in the midst of a very, very difficult economic time. What did they expect was going to happen?
