Congratulations to Gateway Diner, our highest-editor-rated South Jersey diner won ‘Best Diner’ and ‘Best Breakfast’ in the 2008 Courier Post‘ Best of South Jersey’ contest. We have zero affiliation with the good folks over at Courier Post, but we’d like to think their reader vote confirms what we’ve experienced there for quite some time. Sure, we were telling people this in February, but who’s keeping track? =)
Other notables from reviews we’ve made:
Bobby Chez wins ‘Best Crab Cakes’ – we had scored them a 4.4 of 5.0.
Schileen’s Pub wins ‘Best Roast Beef Sandwich’ – we had scored them a 3.55 of 5.0 (but still praised their roast beef!).
Snubs:
Neither of our favorite sushi joints, Tokyo Mandarin or Mt Fuji Japanese, got any love.
Dominic’s, La Riveria Tuscany Bistro, and Jimmi’s, our top pizza finds, didn’t list.

to be honest i can not say gateway is by far the best of anything..there fod is nasty and what ever comes of the grill tastes like the grill..not only that i seen crawlers in this place on many occasions.My family has not eaten at this diner in over 2 years due to there roach problem.

john – needless to say, i’m surprised by your comment. i can only point to the 13 member votes that gateway has right now that are giving it an average score of over 4. you also figure the courier post probably had hundreds of votes too, so that’s quite a lot of people that agree it’s a pretty good value. i’ve certainly never seen roaches! =)
still, if you haven’t been there for two years, perhaps you should give it a visit again and come back and share your thoughts. when you do, head over to gatway’s review and give them your score so it’s reflected in our sitewide average.

I hadn’t been to Gateway in years. When I finally had the chance to go back. I’m sorry I didn’t go sooner. We had the standard party of 4 & for the low price, Gateway served up quite a feast. I was full and still took a large portion home which tasted just as good the next day.

Gateway Diner is noisy and dirty. They pack you in and make you stand in the way of all the traffic as you wait for a seat. The Hostess was rude as well. I think she is one of the owners because she had a I don’t care attitude. The food is priced ok, but the atmosphere and the people are below standards. They need to shut down and scrub the place. I felt like I was standing on 20 year old dirt on the floors. I’ve been there on recommendations from this site. But, after 3 attempts to have a good time, I am moving on. Thanks for posting area restaurants. It is a great idea. I’ve visited others already.

As for all these awful comments about Gateway, anyone who reads them will notice there are only 2 bad reviews…HAPPY PEOPLE DONT COMPLAIN!!!!! so dont go on these reviews.
As a previous employee of gateway and still a current Vistor on may occasions I ASSURE YOU THERE ARE NO MICE, RATS, ROACHES or ANYTHING listed above….What place do you know that you see employees there on their days off or come back after their shift to eat??? They apparently must not be that bad becasue as any regular will tell you the closeness of the employees and owners is AMAZING!!!! No employee would eat or feed their children filth!!!!
Gateway has great food and great prices….as for being “packed in” when you get there APPARENTLY we must be doing something right or you wouldnt have to be “packed in” RIGHT!? People are so quick to judge and go on what they hear and dont give the foor or anything else a Chance!!! Apparently your experience wasnt that bad or you wouldnt have gone back 3 times…your just looking for something to complain about no one give a place a chance 3 times and wastes their money if they really didnt enjoy it!!!!

Jessica – that’s why people get a vote. I notice a lot of people comment without actually voting for a restaurant, which maybe means we have to make it more obvious to do so. At any rate, if you like Gateway, make sure you go to its individual review and vote for them! For what it’s worth, I’m with you. Dollar for dollar, I’d still rather go to Gateway than most other diners, and that’s why we’ve given them a high score.
