When we recently vacationed in San Francisco, one of the things we absolutely wanted to do – and absolutely recommend everyone interested to do – was bike the golden gate bridge. After heading over to blazing saddles to rent some bikes for the day, we decided we were going to take the slightly longer route to Tiburon (about 18 miles) and stop in Sausalito for lunch. After pouring through lots of other review sites (we don’t live in a vacuum!), we thought the best bet was going to be bypassing most of the ‘touristy’ waterfront eateries and hitting up Fred’s.
Thankfully, the building on the side of Fred’s had a bike rack, so we were pleased to lock up and grab a seat outside so we could keep an eye on the rentals. Judging by the California license plates, there were quite a few locals inside. Although we opted to sit at one of the two or three tables outside, the interior seemed pleasant with a lot of wooden accents. Our waiter was friendly and efficient at getting us started with our drinks; Autumn tried their latte.
For our selections, I couldn’t resist picking the dungeness crab omelet with sourdough bread and home fries. Autumn went for the deep fried french toast with fresh fruit. Both were absolutely amazing. The full, spicy-kick of the well-seasoned crab was expertly blended in a fluffy, perfectly cooked omelet. No fillers in this one – a fork was all you needed to discover some serious portions of crab. Autumn’s french toast beckoned questioning of why no other eateries on the east coast (that we’ve been to) have thought of something so delicious. The blackberries on top of the french toast, not expected to be the star of a fried item, were large and juicy. As an added bonus, it came with ‘real’ maple syrup on the side, not a cheap imitation in a metal pitcher. Autumn especially liked her jumbo-sized latte that didn’t carry a jumbo-sized price tag. As far as breakfasts go, this one was about perfect.
Our waiter was above average and our experience was very positive. With terrific food, nice views across the street (it is Sausalito after all!), and a fair price, Fred’s delivers. Overall, we absolutely recommend a visit to Fred’s and anyone nearby Sausalito should really do their taste buds a favor and head over. We’re delighted to bestow Fred’s our highest score to date, edging out our favorite diner up North Jersey.
Guru’s Score: 5.0
Autumn’s Score: 4.9
Combined Score: 4.95
Subjective rating: One of our very best breakfasts. Ever.
