Worth the Drive….From Anywhere

A recent weekend ride to always inviting Bucks County in Pennsylvania did not take the straight route. My travel companion and I wound up making a detour to experience one of the greatest bakeries in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in the Bucks County community of Feasterville. When Carin and Len Metrow reestablished the Feasterville Family Bakery a year ago it was both a dream and a leap of faith. Armed with the confidence that comes from their strong Italian-American family and a superior work ethic a favorite sweet spot returned to Bustleton Avenue. Now in an age of mass production and genericization this is the real deal. The bread dough is made by hand…not just acquired from a commercial third party and then baked. No, Len gets up at 3AM to mix the dough and start the “proofing” process. His sleep deprivation is your gain resulting in artisanal bread and rolls that will recall family dinners when your grandmother, or Nona, made everything from scratch. It’s still the only way things are done at the Feasterville Family Bakery.

Talk is cheap…but be forewarned…I have personally tasted, and can attest to the fact that their crème doughnuts are truly the best in Bucks County, if not the entire Commonwealth. Cloud like in their lightness of body and that’s just the doughnut itself. Len makes the delightful crème filling by hand and it’s fresh every day. For that alone you will be truly thankful. In this case the early bird advice rings true….get there sooner rather than later because the crème doughnuts go quickly. And so should you to peruse the spotless glass display cases containing Danish pastries of all sorts, look for the star shaped fruit filled ones if not sold out, doughnuts of course, all the favorite fruit pies plus Lemon Meringue. Cheese cakes, pound cakes and of course cannolis compete for your attention and yes…affection. If the crème doughnut wasn’t enough…like me you should also try the crumb buns. They come in both the traditional powdered version and an iced version. Each of them was moist, delicate and amply “crumbed”.

Want delicious cookies to go with your tea or coffee a great homemade selection is offered. A chocolate “fix” can happily be had as the bakery also offers a great product line from Hatboro’s own Stutz Candy Company. When the seasons change you will find familiar favorites such as Pumpkin Pie and crisp freshly picked Apples go into their Apple Pie. Special orders for birthdays, graduations and other memorable family events are always available and customized according to your preferences. All of the products at the Feasterville Family Bakery are made without the use of preservatives and gluten free items are available on request.

Out front at the counters Carin is both gracious and joyful-welcoming you as warmly as if you were in her own front parlor. In an age when changes seem to be the only constant and nothing remains the same be prepared to be pleasantly surprised at the Feasterville Family Bakery. Its product and service remains solidly consistent taking nothing for granted. Visiting Feasterville Family Bakery is a habit worth repeating and one of life’s affordable special treats!
