Fast Casual? Denny’s Signaling End of Sit-Down Era

According to a CNBC report (video below the jump), Denny’s is piloting a ‘fresh express’ experience to effectively compete with the McDonalds’ of the world. If it flies, you can now upgrade your takeout breakfast to what should be a decent product by the looks of the video. Unfortunately,  I wonder if that means that sitting down for a good, relatively inexpensive Denny’s meal is going out the window in the near future. There are reasons why you dont like to sit down at a McDonalds – it’s noisy, usually crowded, and all sorts of people coming and going. Let’s hope Denny’s finds a good way to isolate the take-out traffic from the sit down ones. There are far fewer sit-down breakfast places than dinner places, so it will be interesting to see the future response from someone like IHOP. Interesting note in the video.. in one of the test locations only 6-10% of the sales came from the ‘fresh express’ counter. I’d think that’d have to double to really see Denny’s dive into drive-thrus and curbside pickups.
